Now, let’s be honest, I sell accounting spreadsheets, so, I am obviously biased! My answer will sing the praises for  ‘simple’, easy to use bookkeeping and accounting spreadsheets and at the same time pour ridicule and scorn over more expensive proprietary accounting software  packages.

But, not so.

My background is 100% Accountancy, and for the past 25 years 80% Accounting Software.  I am used to selling and installing accounting software ranging in price and complexity from a few pounds to thousands of pounds.

It’s ‘Horses for Courses’

If you are just starting out and taking the first few tentative steps in recording your business transactions, then it would be inappropriate for you to spend a considerable amount of time and money on accounting software that is overly complicated and does not provide you with simple, easy to understand financial data.

On the other hand, if you are an established business, then you will know EXACTLY what you require from your accounting software, and will know EXACTLY which product meets your business needs.

So, try match your accounting software choice with your current status and level of understanding.

It is important that you keep control of the business finances, and to do that you need to be certain that the financial data you rely on is ACCURATE, RELIABLE and most importantly UNDERSTANDABLE.
